One of the most well-established schools in Turkey, Kabataş Boys' High School visited Canada for the Çanakkale martyrs' commemoration program with the Onbeşliler Choir it founded. The young people who gave a concert within the scope of the program became the first Turkish delegation to go to Canada to commemorate the martyrs of Çanakkale.
Kabataş Erkek High School students visited Canada with the Onbeşliler Choir, which they founded in memory of the students and teachers who were martyred in the Balkan Wars, the Gallipoli War, World War I, and the War of Independence. Young people who participated in the Çanakkale martyrs commemoration program held in Canada gave a concert in memory of the martyrs in the state of Newfoundland. Kabataş Boys' High School students, who received a standing ovation, became the first Turkish delegation to go to Canada to commemorate the martyrs of Çanakkale. After the concert, the delegation was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Ambassador to Ottawa, Kerim Uras, at the Embassy residence and was rewarded a plaque of appreciation.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who attended the opening ceremony of Kabataş Erkek High School for the academic year in 2018, took the Onbeşliler Choir under the auspices of the Presidency upon the letter he received from the students at the ceremony and supported the choir's concerts in Czechia, Hungary, and Poland. The visit to Canada, which is considered the fourth pillar of the project, was supported by the International High School Student Exchange Program (WCEP).
Canada visit paved the way for worldwide collaborations in education
Volkan Cerrahoğlu, General Manager of WCEP Turkey who supported the Onbeşliler Choir project of Kabataş Erkek High School students and undertook their visit to Canada, said, "As WCEP, we owe it to ourselves to hold the hands of the young people who will build our future. Our main goal is to contribute to the development of students as individuals who have intercultural skills, represent their country in the best way abroad and have their feet on the ground. Finally, we had the opportunity to meet our Ottawa Ambassador Kerim Uras, who hosted us during the Canada visit of the Onbeşliler Choir project, which we support, and to inform him about our cultural and academic studies. Thus, we took an important step for our country to initiate worldwide collaborations in the field of education. In addition, being awarded a plaque of appreciation was a source of great pride for the promising young people of our country and for us who guide them. We would like to thank our Ambassador and all Embassy staff for their support and hospitality to our delegation."
From common values to common goals
Pointing out that commemoration ceremonies are extremely important in terms of strengthening the bond between the two countries, Volkan Cerrahoğlu said, "Kabataş Erkek High School could not produce graduates for a while due to the students participating in the Gallipoli War and being martyred in the war. At that time, Gonzaga High School in Newfoundland also lost its students who participated in the Gallipoli War and could not produce graduates in the same way. It is very valuable to establish a bond between these two countries after many years and to organize a joint commemoration program. We hope that after such a meaningful project, similar ones will be born, and we believe that common values will lead to common goals.” - ISTANBUL
