Izmir Ataturk High School started to implement international curriculum within the scope of the cooperation it started with WCEP Turkey (International High School Student Exchange Program). It was stated that Izmir Atatürk High School, which will implement the world's leading international curriculum and diploma program AP (Advanced Placement), is the first school in the Aegean region and the sixth school in Turkey to implement the program. Following the approval by the Ministry of National Education and the Board of Education and Discipline at the end of 2019, students will receive an international diploma by taking 5 courses in 4 different fields within the scope of the program, which was officially put into practice with the approval received from the USA at the beginning of May. In addition, students will be able to have foreign language skills at native level. The program, which is officially recognized by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and Turkish universities, also includes advantages such as completion of university education in 3 years and double diploma.
"Our public high schools are connecting to the world"
WCEP Turkey General Manager Volkan Cerrahoğlu stated that they were happy and proud to have achieved a result that would be an example for all regions of Turkey by receiving the reward of their efforts after an intense working process, and said, "Our main aim with these star projects is to carry the education our students receive in public high schools to the international level and to contribute to their development as individuals who will set an example both for their country and the world. In line with this goal we have set, we will continue with all our efforts to integrate our public high schools into the world with new projects."
Referring to the cooperation, Izmir Atatürk High School Principal Ahmet Yılmaz said, "I hope that the international curriculum program we have implemented will open new horizons for our school and our students, and I believe that it will take us to much better places. As Izmir Atatürk High School, one of the leading educational institutions of our country with its 132-year-old history, we are proud to be the first public high school in the Aegean Region to implement the AP International Curriculum program, and we would like to thank the Ministry of National Education, the Board of Education and Discipline, and WCEP Turkey officials.”
It is possible to be exempt from university courses with the high school education offered by the program. Advanced Placement, which was first implemented in the United States and spread all over the world and applied in more than 60 countries, is currently implemented in a small number of schools in Turkey. AP, which is considered one of the most important international diploma programs in the world, has been administered by the College Board, which has been administering the SAT exams taken by students who want to receive undergraduate education at American universities since 1955. AP, also called the pre-university program, also provides advantages to students in the admission process and exemption from courses when applying to universities abroad. The program offers students the opportunity to take university-level courses while still in high school, both in terms of the content and teaching of the courses and the way it measures knowledge.
How does the International High School Student Exchange Program work? Having been implemented in more than 60 countries for approximately 70 years, the program aims to improve intercultural communication, prevent inter-societal prejudices and facilitate the promotion of countries' languages and cultures. Within the scope of the program, Turkish high school students between the ages of 15-18 who want to complete at least 1 year of their high school education in a different country can currently have the opportunity to study in Canada, the USA, Italy, and France. The program is organized by the Ministries of Education or the Department of State of the relevant countries, and student selection is carried out by institutions with quotas accredited to these ministries. While all legal processes, placement procedures, and program rules are determined by the ministries of the countries, a GPA of minimum "C" in all courses is expected as the success criterion. Through ministry programs, students spend one or more years of their high school education with volunteer families selected with high security criteria and are directed to the school closest to the family.
